Komodo OpenLab enhances the accessibility of mainstream technologies by leveraging the wisdom of users and their communities through the use of open-source technologies and open standards.
Komodo’s first product, Tecla, is a set of open software and hardware tools that facilitate access to mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, for those who are unable to manipulate them due to disease or disability. Tecla users can control their devices by using highly customized interfaces which they are already familiar with, such as their wheelchair driving controls or adapted switches.
Unlike other assistive products and services, Tecla enables access to off-the-shelf products, including iPhone, iPad and Android devices, promoting more sustainable development of inclusive, rather than segregated products and services for the population that carries mobility impairments.
Smartphones and tablets are revolutionizing our lives. These devices can increase productivity, strengthen social networks, facilitate leisure, and enable instant access to online products and services while on the move. However, millions of people with mobility impairments (12 million in North America and Europe alone) are unable to access such devices and thus cannot take advantage of the benefits that have been readily available to their peers. Tecla bridges this gap, allowing those with disabilities to make use of these powerful tools.
