Bionik Laboratories is a Toronto-based medical engineering research and development corporation with a focus on brain controlled prosthetics and rehabilitation devices. Products in development include artificial lungs and assistive walking tools for paraplegics. Its mission is to create innovative and affordable medical technologies.
A sample project is their Artificial Muscle-Operated (AMO) Arm that offers a greater range of movement than traditional prostheses, and does not require the amputee to undergo invasive surgery. It is also easy to use and is relatively inexpensive to make. While it took them a year to create the custom software, the prototype itself was assembled in just 72 hours.
Projects underway include a pneumatic full arm prosthetic controlled by an external electroencephalograph (EEG) system, as well as a permanent solution for total lung replacement. Bionik Labs is also working with major hospitals in the US and Canada on clinical trials surrounding assisted technology for paraplegics.
