Biography:
Bijan is the founder of Virtual Next, a mobile and social prepaid / gift card platform for Canadian retailers and restaurants. Prior to Virtual Next, Bijan was eCommerce manager at Futureshop.ca, Canada’s largest e-retailer. Bijan is a serial tech entrepreneur that has a sound understanding of the mobile commerce industry. Bijan’s first company, CellClients, was hailed for its innovation in solving the challenges of Canadian mobile contracts by numerous media outlets including The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Sun, The Toronto Star, CBC and CP24. Bijan has a bachelor of electrical engineering and an MBA from The University of Toronto.

Biography:
Ryerson University Electrical and Computer Engineering PhD student Adrian Bulzacki is the founder of ARB Labs Inc., a high-tech company that designs enterprise grade gesture recognition software. In his studies Adrian specializes in multimedia systems with a particular focus on Predictive Gesture Recognition and Augmented Reality.

A self-described “big technology tinkerer” and “hardware hobbyist,” Adrian’s field of expertise extends to computer software and hardware, including mobile electronics and performance computing. With over 17 years combined experience in the field of computer consulting, repair and sales, retail, engineering and manufacturing, he is also an expert in consumer technology and future trends in this area.

Brennan McEachran

Biography:
Brennan McEachran is a commerce student entering his fourth year at Ryerson University and CEO and Founder of HitSend Inc.

McEachran devised HitSend in 2010 after a pivotal meeting with Ryerson President Sheldon Levy when he identified a need to more effectively gather, organize and implement students’ suggestions for the university’s administration. Out of this meeting, HitSend was born. HitSend builds web applications that empower communities to set and achieve collective goals. The company’s first product SoapBox is a community crowdsourcing tool for gathering, prioritizing, and executing ideas which integrates into existing online communities. After successful pilot projects within various Ryerson departments, the SoapBox technology is currently in use by several high profile organizations, including Indigo Books and Music Inc. as part of its recently launched Indigo Ideas campaign for improving customer service. HitSend is currently incubating in Ryerson’s Digital Media Zone and plans to launch SoapBox Ryerson-wide in September 2012.

In addition to his work with HitSend, McEachran also teaches Mockups to Launch, an ongoing series of seminars teaching participants how to design and build their web ideas.

David Senior

Biography:
David Senior graduated from Ryerson University’s Ted Rogers School of Business Management in 2007 with a degree in Entrepreneurship. While still a student, David founded two web-based companies focused on social media and e-commerce. After graduation he worked in purchasing before starting his own mobile application development business at the Digital Media Zone. David also works as a consultant for online e-commerce retailers helping them expand their businesses into the mobile space.

Chris Nguyen

Biography:
Chris Nguyen is a Ryerson grad from the Ted Rogers School of Information Technology Management. He earned his stripes in entrepreneurship while still studying at Ryerson, launching JobLoft.com along with three classmates. Within a year the upstart had posted over 20,000 jobs from top employers across Canada and enjoyed widespread media attention. Chris launched his next venture TeamSave.com in April of 2010 and in less than a year had outgrown the DMZ and expanded. He is a mentor for current students in the Digital Media Zone and named to the Steering Committee at the DMZ.

Valerie Fox

Biography:
Valerie Fox is the Director of Ryerson’s Digital Media Zone and was instrumental in its development and opening in April of 2010. With more than 25 years of experience in the creative industry, Valerie is an expert in and advocate of the user experience. She has worked with technology in the university sector, for industry and for consumers. Her roles have varied from business development, to creative direction and user experience for various digital technologies including digital media (3-D virtual experiences, video production and animation), portal, e-Commerce, e-Marketing, eLearning, Kiosk, mobile applications for museums, live events, public, retail and financial institutions.

Before joining Ryerson University, Valerie was the National Practice Lead of User Experience Design for IBM Canada. Fox also holds multiple patents including one for the concept of the “Universal Shopping Cart.”

Dr. Hossein Rahnama

DMZ Research Director

Biography:
Dr. Hossein Rahnama is the Associate Director of Ryerson’s Digital Media Zone (DMZ). Hossein leads the DMZ’s market-driven research arm, facilitating and encouraging industry partnerships with DMZ companies and teams. In the DMZ, Hossein conducts research that combines context-aware computing, artificial intelligence, and online social networking. He specializes in mobile software solutions that respond to situational factors and personal information.

Hossein is the recipient of an OCE International Scholarship, Ryerson NSERC Innovation Challenge Award, Apple Inc. student scholarship, and in 2008, he was a semi-finalist for the business plan competition at Harvard Business School. Hossein has more than 15 publications and patents on Ubiquitous and Pervasive Computing.
