How do I apply? Do I need to submit a business plan?
You can apply through the Apply page. You don’t need to submit a formal business plan—just fill in the fields in the application form.
What is the application deadline?
There is no deadline. You can apply anytime. The amount of time it takes to complete your application process depends on how solid your business foundation is and how busy we are. If you get accepted to enter the DMZ your start date will be dependent on our ability to accommodate you. Currently it takes an average of 2-3 months for the entire process, but there are exceptions.
What criteria will you use to decide which companies to invite?
Check out our Eligibility Criteria on our Apply page. If you don’t meet the criteria now and are a Ryerson Student you can still apply and we will help you evolve your business idea to the point where you do.
What kind of team is the DMZ looking for?
We’re seeking multidisciplinary teams of passionate entrepreneurs who have an idea that involves some aspect of technology. Check out our current Teams to get a sense of what we have now. Our vibrant companies represent varied sectors and we are always open to new possibilities.
Is my company “too far along” to apply to the DMZ?
Not likely. We’ve had and currently have companies with hefty revenue and funding and still helped them with introductions, financing, and more.
Is my company “not far enough along” to apply to the DMZ?
Not likely either, mainly because by the time you’ve completed the DMZ application process you will, by necessity, have a foundation to your business idea. Check out our Apply page for more information.
What services and opportunities will DMZ provide?
See our helpful Team Perks section.
Where will we live while we’re there?
That’s up to you—we don’t provide a place to live.
What is expected of me?
We want you to work hard and stay focused so you achieve your goal—bringing a product or service to market. We hope you’ll be open to our advice and ideas. We also expect you to meet your set milestones so you can progress through the startup stages and reach success. And we want you to contribute to our vibrant collaborative environment (gives and receives value).
Once I am accepted, how long can I stay at the DMZ?
A term in the DMZ is typically four-months in length. Subject to space availability, members in good standing have the option to request to opt into the paid-membership program.
How much does it cost to incubate my company at the DMZ?
The first four-month term is typically fee-free for most startups. A startup who has brought in $250K or more, through revenue, grants or investments, is required to join the paid membership program upon entry into the DMZ, which is calculated on a per-person basis.
Can I apply if I’m not from Canada?
Yes, but you must be legally living in the greater Toronto area during your time at the DMZ.
Does it matter how old I am?
We care more about your idea and your ability than your age. Most of our applicants are between 18-30, but we believe great ideas happen at every age.
